Process Paper
Why I Chose My Topic?
I chose to do my project on Aldo Leopold for many reasons. My two favorite subjects in school are biology and history so I wanted to complete a project that integrated both of those topics. The environmental movement was a compromise between them. In American history, there have been a lot of different movements. Some are well known such as the Progressive movement while some like the Environmental movement are more obscure and less known. Aldo Leopold is not your typical talking point at dinner but with all he did to help our country and world, he should be. I completed this project to raise awareness for Leopold, a champion of our earth.
How I conducted my research?
I completed my research through the use of many different resources. In the beginning when I was just meeting Aldo Leopold, I scavengered the internet. I eventually stumbled upon the Encyclopedia of the Earth. An author had written a 10 part series of articles on Leopold. It was deep and insightful and provided me with biographical information. A specific article entitled the “Leopold Legacy” was particularly helpful. At a garage sale, I found a book on Aldo Leopold. It included many passages from his A Sand County Almanac. By reading words written by Leopold himself, it helped me gain a stronger understanding and appreciation of Leopold’s ideas and legacy. The book was exciting and well written. Overall I used a multitude of sources ranging from online to books.
How I selected and created my project?
I chose to do a website for many reasons. First of all, with all the primary sources I had located, a website would be an easy way to organize and present them. In addition, since Aldo Leopold was an environmentalist I thought that a website would be the greenest way to present my information. I had experience making a Weebly website so it wasn’t difficult to figure out the controls. The thing that I had the most trouble with was planning my pages. I didn’t want them to be to general or specific and I wanted them to best exemplify the themes without listing them.
How does Aldo Leopold relate to the theme?
Aldo Leopold demonstrates the themes Leadership and Legacy in many different ways. Leopold wasn’t the type of leader you think of when you hear “leader.” He wasn’t a George Washington or Crazy Horse, leading countries and cultures. He led by example. He inspired. President John Quincy Adams said, "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." Leopold caused people to be more ecologically conscious by leading the environmental movement. The more obvious theme Leopold demonstrates is Legacy. His ideas, thoughts, and writing provided the platform for all environmental policy today. For every environmental issue, scientists look for the causes, immediate impacts, and long term consequences. That is the basis of ecology, the branch of biology that Leopold created.
